RCAF Pacemaker

Here we have Bellanca Pacemaker G-CYVG of the RCAF on floats. The photo was taken in 1931 at Fort Fitzgerald, Alberta. The RCAF used the Bellanca mostly for photo survey work. (Photo courtesy of the Canada Department of Mines and Technical Surveys/Library and Archives Canada.)

Modeler's Note: I understand Khee-Kha models of Alaska does a vacuform Pacemaker in 1/72. I'll have to get one someday.

Why did many RCAF aircraft of the 30s have civil registrations?

Up until a certain point all RCAF aircraft carried civil registrations. I'm not quite sure why. Anyone know?

It may have been because the pre-1939 RCAF did a fair amount of what would normally be classed as "civilian" work -- Forestry patrols, etc. Perhaps they felt that civil registrations were justifiable for aircraft primarily doing civilian work. Just a thought...
